This is a pioneering project in Spain that the Department of the Presidency is undertaking as a line of action for the 'Maspalomas Smart Destination' project, subsidized with European funds.
The San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council has installed seven SOS stations in key mountain and mountainous areas of the municipality, as part of a pioneering project in Spain to strengthen the safety of pilgrims, hikers, and at-risk athletes. The initiative, presented by Mayor Marco Aurelio Pérez along with Councilors Elena Álamo and José Carlos Álamo, is part of the "DTI Maspalomas Smart Destination" plan, funded by Europe and with an investment of €200.000. The stations have been placed at strategic locations such as Los Vicentillos, Amurga, and Barranco Hondo, selected by SEIS firefighters based on criteria such as isolation, difficulty, and accident rates.
The SOS posts are smart, solar-powered, monitored 24/7, and offer direct assistance with 112 via cameras and georeferenced connectivity. In addition to serving as emergency points, they also serve as shaded meeting spaces. The project was carried out by the Imesapi-Ayesa joint venture and is based on an exhaustive analysis of previous incidents. At the official presentation, Maspalomas Fire Chief José Felipe Santana conducted a simulation to demonstrate the system's effectiveness, which represents a qualitative leap forward in safety and assistance in natural environments.
