The leadership of Nueva Canarias (NC) has taken a decisive step to strip the councilors who left the party and joined Primero Canarias (Prica) of all the political benefits that come with their positions, focusing especially on the south of Gran Canaria. In San Bartolomé de Tirajana and the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana—popularly known as Vecindario—NC's offensive is underway and is firmly in place. In San Bartolomé de Tirajana, the five councilors that NC won in 2023 have disassociated themselves from the party and are now part of Prica, but the Canary Islands leadership has already asked the local councils to declare these councilors defectors and make them unaffiliated, with the consequent loss of rights and resources associated with the political group.
The case of San Bartolomé is particularly symbolic, as the official NC municipal group remains active in plenary sessions, while the defected councilors, led by Samuel Henríquez, maintain their public representation as spokespersons for Prica, despite not having the party's formal endorsement. In Vecindario, Mayor Francisco García and five other councilors who also left NC to join Prica are facing the same strategy from the regional leadership, which is demanding they become non-affiliated. "A mayor can be non-affiliated just as a councilor," emphasized NC coordinator Luis Campos.
Meanwhile, the municipality of Mogán remains in a state of uncertainty, with neither the position of the councilors who left NC nor the legal course of action yet clearly defined. However, the possibility of the offensive extending to this strategic enclave in the south of the island is not ruled out. The Canary Islands Municipal Law establishes that non-affiliated councilors retain certain individual political rights, but lose income, resources, and exclusive positions linked to belonging to a political group, a condition that NC hopes will be applied to the 22 councilors who have switched parties. NC's offensive not only seeks to restore internal cohesion but also to limit the power and visibility of Prica in its main strongholds, starting in the south of Gran Canaria, where this new force is trying to consolidate its position.
