Juan Grande and El Tablero are among the hot spots in an anti-drug operation that has left nearly fifty people arrested.
The National Police launched a massive anti-drug operation yesterday, Tuesday, resulting in nearly 50 arrests. The searches focused on well-known locations such as Juan Grande, El Tablero, and several locations in Telde, but with a particular focus on southern residential areas that have been highlighted in police reports in recent years due to their increasing drug-related activity.
The operation, dubbed "Black Shadow," is not the result of a routine patrol. It was directly directed by the National Court and the Special Anti-Drug Prosecutor's Office, which gives an indication of the scale of the dismantled network. According to official sources, this is a long-running investigation that has also involved Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
Throughout the morning, dozens of officers carried out simultaneous searches of homes, businesses, and storage rooms, where they hoped to uncover key evidence about the organization's operations. Although details of the seizures have not yet been released, a more detailed account is expected to be provided in the coming days.
For the tourist-friendly south of Gran Canaria, these types of operations aren't just a blow to organized crime: they're also a shock to its image as a safe and secure destination. The fact that such a large-scale operation is being carried out in areas near tourist hubs right before summer doesn't go unnoticed, and it compels local and regional authorities to redouble their efforts to prevent drug trafficking from finding refuge in the tourist heart of the Canary Islands.
