Manuel Domínguez commits to a study by the Canary Islands Government on the commercial development of the midlands to "leverage the population."
The mayor urges the regional minister of Economy, Industry, Commerce and the Self-Employed to seek funding for the expansion and improvement of the Gáldar Avenue ZCA (Central Zone of Urban Development) and for the construction of the CETA (Central Urban Development Center) of the Mancomunidad de las Medianías de Gran Canaria (Mancomunidad de las Medianías de Gran Canaria).
Mayor Marco Aurelio Pérez Sánchez received a visit this Friday from the Vice President of the Canary Islands Government and Minister of Economy, Industry, Commerce, and the Self-Employed, Manuel Domínguez, with whom he discussed issues across various areas of his government "of general interest to the municipality in relation to investment, tourism, housing, education, and commerce, among others," they stated.
One of the issues they emphasized "due to its special importance for the future," according to the mayor, was the depopulation affecting the mid-mountain and mountain areas of the municipality and throughout Gran Canaria, in contrast to the overpopulation in coastal areas. In this regard, and due to the closure of businesses and the surge in activity exclusively on weekends, Vice President Manuel Domínguez pledged to commission, through the Canary Islands Government, "detailed analyses linked particularly to economic development and business activity in the area to see how we can further leverage the population and generate greater economic activity in these areas. I am aware that it will not be an easy task, but I believe it is opportune at this time to take advantage of the benefits that the mid-mountain areas offer not only to this municipality but to the Canary Islands in general. Considering that these are the areas with the highest number of vacant homes and given the existing deficit, perhaps this will become an opportunity to analyze this situation," he stated.
Funding for CETA
Another issue they also discussed in detail was the project for a large Temporary Animal Shelter (CETA) planned for construction in this municipality, which is being processed by the Association of Municipalities of the Medianías of Gran Canaria. "We need funding to build this center, with a surface area of almost 10.000 m², intended to serve all the municipalities in the Association. The project is practically complete and its execution will be put out to tender shortly," stated Marco Aurelio Pérez, who obtained from the Vice President—as the latter acknowledged—a commitment to seek co-financing between administrations. "There is currently no funding for this, because it is a novel project, but I have committed to thoroughly studying the way to obtain it," admitted Manuel Domínguez.
The mayor and the regional vice president also discussed seeking funding for the development, expansion, and improvement of the Open Commercial Zone on Avenida de Gáldar to contribute to the commercial development of San Fernando de Maspalomas from a tourism perspective. "We are going to obtain financial resources from those currently available to support this Commercial Zone," stated Domínguez.
