The Cabildo will open a fourth lane on the GC-9 highway near La Pardilla on the night of Sunday to Monday, June 1, to improve traffic flow to the south of Gran Canaria.

The Gran Canaria Island Council's Department of Public Works will install a new fourth lane on the GC-1, heading south, near La Pardilla. This project is part of the measures agreed upon by the inter-administrative working committee to mitigate traffic problems on the southern highway.

 

Days and times of the intervention

The southbound multi-lane closure is scheduled for the night of Sunday, June 8, into Monday, June 9, beginning at 23:00 p.m. and ending at 6:00 a.m. Work will begin between the El Cortijo and La Estrella interchanges. If necessary, work will continue on the night of Monday, June 9, into Tuesday, June 10, at the same time. During the closure, the leftmost lane will remain open.

 

Features of the performance

 

The new fourth lane, just over a kilometer long, will be opened using the existing service road and the bus lane that begins at Makro. This measure eliminates direct access and exit from the GC-1 to the La Pardilla neighborhood, redirecting traffic through Gutenberg and Alexander Bell streets. Between Thursday and Sunday, the new signage will be installed, and the "dead end" status will be indicated on the direct road.

 

In addition, a continuous line will be implemented between the La Pardilla interchange and the entrance to Telde, reserving the two leftmost lanes for vehicles traveling directly south, while the two right lanes will be used primarily for accessing La Estrella and Telde, although southbound traffic will also be permitted. Vehicles in the left lanes will not be allowed to detour toward La Estrella or Telde after crossing the continuous line, with the next exit being Melenara.

 

Other actions

 

The Global bus stop in La Pardilla will be moved to Makro, and the access bus lane will be removed, opening it to all vehicles starting Monday, June 9. Cabildo workers are already updating the information signage on the GC-1 entrances, which will go into effect on Monday.

 

Project context

 

The goal is to improve traffic flow through painting and signage while a final project is put out to tender by the regional government. In the future, these provisional modifications are planned to be revoked once the final works are completed, which include the construction of a fourth structural lane and, as a medium-term alternative, the possible implementation of a HOV bus lane.
