New Sign Language course at the Maspalomas Summer University, from July 7 to 11

The Maspalomas Summer University will organize a new edition of the course on "Spanish Sign Language," which will take place from July 7 to 11, in the morning and afternoon sessions, at the Maspalomas Cultural Center.

 

Sign Language, as established in Law 27/2007, of October 23, which recognizes Spanish sign languages ​​and regulates the means of support for oral communication for deaf, hard-of-hearing, and deaf-blind people, and Law 51/2003, of December 2, on equal opportunities, non-discrimination, and universal accessibility for people with disabilities. 

 

The classes will be taught by Davinia Villanueva Pérez, a sign language teacher with a degree in Special Education from the University of Granada, a specialist teacher of Spanish Sign Language in various organizations, and a social educator in federations for deaf people in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, specializing in educational guidance for families with deaf people.

This training is aimed at people who wish to learn sign language, people who work with the public and professionals in any field who may deal or may come to deal with deaf people, people who have deaf family members or friends, people who need to use sign language as an alternative communication system with people with speech problems or communication difficulties, such as autism or Down syndrome, and people who want to expand their resume and have a career as sign language translators.

 

There is an increasing need for professionals with sign language skills to communicate with deaf people or other users with speech and communication difficulties, such as people with autism or Down syndrome.

 

The 33rd edition of the Maspalomas Summer University is organized by the Department of Culture of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and the Gran Canaria Island Council.
