Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Ingenio, and Agüimes are committed to sustainability and the digitalization of public spaces thanks to this new project.
The Intermunicipal Association of Southeast Gran Canaria has launched an ambitious urban modernization project with the installation of 19 smart waste bins and compactors in nine Open Commercial Zones (ACZs) in the municipalities of Agüimes, Ingenio, and Santa Lucía de Tirajana. This project is co-financed by the Government of the Canary Islands through a grant, providing 60% of a total budget of €93.415, intended for the development of complementary facilities to boost local commerce.
The units to be implemented in the different areas were presented this Monday, June 9, in Plaza Algodoneros, in Vecindario, where two of these units will be located. At this event, which was attended by the president of the Commonwealth and mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Francisco García; the mayor of Ingenio, Vanesa Martín; and the mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández, a demonstration was given of how these smart bins work.
The project aims not only to solve problems such as the deterioration or inadequacy of current wastebaskets, but also to boost the image, sustainability, and efficiency of commercial areas. To this end, state-of-the-art solar-powered wastebaskets will be installed, with compaction capacity, fill sensors, real-time connectivity, and accessible, vandal-resistant design.
The 19 units will be distributed as follows:
- Santa Lucia de Tirajana: 10 waste bins (ZCA Avenida de Canarias, Historic Centre and Pozo Izquierdo).
- Ingenio: 4 waste bins (ZCA El Carrizal, Historic Center of Ingenio and El Burrero).
- Agüimes: 4 trash cans (ZCA Historic Center, Arinaga Crossing and Arinaga Beach).
- 1 for the Commonwealth, intended for events.
The president of the Commonwealth, Francisco García, explained that "this is a project of the Southeast Commonwealth to improve waste infrastructure in commercial areas, modernizing them, improving their aesthetics, and optimizing management."
"These bins increase storage capacity with compaction capabilities, fill sensors, real-time connectivity, and an accessible, vandal-resistant design. Compaction also reduces the frequency of emptying and prevents overflows," García said.
The new waste bins are designed to blend seamlessly into the urban environment and allow their status to be monitored using mobile apps for operators. Installation includes institutional signage, management software, and a minimum two-year warranty.
This exemplary action reinforces the Southeast Commonwealth's commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the continuous improvement of public spaces, consolidating Open Commercial Zones as attractive, efficient environments adapted to the challenges of the future.
