Maspalomas and the German family: tourism forecasts for summer 2025

YV MASPALOMAS24H Wednesday, June 18, 2025

In Germany, middle-class families, which account for approximately 60% of all active households (around 30 million), are facing a complex situation where disposable income has suffered a slight decline of 1,5% in real terms in 2024 due to persistent inflation, which has remained close to 4% in the last year. Despite this adjustment, spending on leisure and tourism is not only stable but is growing moderately, with an average household budget of around €1.500 for summer vacations, reflecting the priority these families place on maintaining their quality of life even in times of economic restriction.

This commitment to vacations translates into a 12% increase in summer travel bookings by 2025, according to data from the German Tourism Federation (DTV). Foreign tourism, especially to destinations with stable climates and good value for money, is emerging as the first choice for 70% of German middle-class families. In this context, Maspalomas is positioned as an ideal destination, supported by the record number of 1.2 million German passengers arriving in Gran Canaria in 2024, 15% more than the previous year, and representing 25% of the total number of German tourists traveling to the Canary Islands.

The German economic environment also points to a strengthening of purchasing power in key tourism sectors. The unemployment rate remains low, around 3,2%, and the average annual household income reaches €45.000, allowing many families to maintain spending on vacation experiences, despite inflation and rising household energy costs, which have increased the cost of household spending by around €600 per year.

On the other hand, German families increasingly value the sustainability and environmental impact of their tourist destinations. In Maspalomas, investment in ecological projects such as the Dunes nature reserve and the improvement in the energy efficiency of hotels—which have already reduced their consumption by 20% in the last three years—fits in with this sensitivity. According to recent surveys, 65% of German families prioritize destinations with sustainable offerings, a key finding for the Canary Islands, which competes with other Mediterranean destinations.

Finally, Germany's economic stability and expectations for 2025—with GDP growth estimated at a modest 1,2%—have families planning cautiously, but without sacrificing their vacations. The combination of good air connections (with a 10% increase in direct flights from German cities to Gran Canaria) and a family-friendly tourist offering make Maspalomas a solid choice. It's not just a question of sun and sand, but also of household budget, quality of life, and vacation experience.
