Maspalomas police headquarters expands its canine unit with a 48-day-old Brittany Spaniel.
Mayor Marco Aurelio Pérez Sánchez met Moka the puppy this Monday, who joined the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Local Police Canine Unit just a few days ago.
The dog, a 48-day-old Brittany Spaniel, is under the professional care and guidance of Officer José Alberto Santana Socorro and Officer Abel Almeida Déniz, who are already developing a detailed work and training plan for her adaptation, training, and learning.
The two Moka officers explained to the mayor that to carry out this task, they are counting on the support and assistance of Peka, the canine unit's seven-year-old veteran dog, who has been providing support services to the officers' operations for almost five years.
In addition to its top officials, the City Councilor for Security and Emergencies, José Carlos Álamo Ojeda, and the Chief Commissioner of the Local Police, Isidro Armas Díaz, also participated in the Moka presentation.
With the addition of Moka to the canine unit, the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Local Police Headquarters has expanded the number of officers it can employ in simultaneous surveillance operations in different locations and, at the same time, has ensured the generational succession of Peka.
Peka, which is performing extremely well at police checkpoints, is capable of detecting up to seven different narcotics (cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, hashish, marijuana, crystal meth, and methylenediaminetetramethylphenidate (MDA)) and can also track them with its sense of smell, even at safe distances from police checkpoints. Moka, the dog, is already being trained to detect hashish.
