Amadeus confirms that Maspalomas is on a roll: Demand is dispersing towards the Canary Islands sun.

The roar of engines and the constant coming and going of tourists at Gran Canaria Airport confirm an unstoppable trend: Maspalomas and the south of the island are consolidating their position as one of Europe's most coveted destinations. A recent report, "Travel Insights 2025: Focus on Europe," prepared by Amadeus and UN Tourism, reveals that while European air traffic is growing by 6.7% through October, the southern and Mediterranean region, where the Canary Islands shine, is growing even faster, with a remarkable 7.7%. And within this trend, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is emerging strongly, signaling a dispersion of demand toward leisure and sun centers.

The study, which analyzes trends between May 2024 and April 2025, confirms the uninterrupted dominance of traditional destinations, accounting for 70.9% of all trips. Spain and the United Kingdom lead scheduled air capacity, each with 12%, highlighting their role as "gateways to Europe."

However, the crucial factor for Maspalomas and the archipelago lies in the dispersion of demand. The Amadeus report highlights how cities such as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, along with Alicante, Palma, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, are among the 10 destinations with the highest growth in bookings in the southern and Mediterranean regions. This phenomenon is no coincidence; it reflects a growing interest in secondary destinations, especially among repeat travelers or those seeking less crowded experiences.

While the report highlights the "explosive" growth of destinations like Azerbaijan (with a 26% increase in air bookings) and search interest in places like Norway and Georgia, these often face barriers such as price sensitivity, limited connectivity, and the perception of more difficult access.

In contrast, established destinations like Spain not only maintain their leadership in searches and bookings—being number one in Southern and Mediterranean Europe, ahead of Italy and Greece—but their established tourist hubs like Maspalomas and its capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, are capitalizing on the search for safety and proven experience.

While Istanbul, Rome, and Madrid remain the most searched and booked cities due to their "strong brand value," the growth in bookings for cities like Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Palma, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife indicates a clear shift in preferences. Travelers aren't just looking for culture and big cities; they're increasingly opting for the security of the sun, beaches, and established leisure options offered by a destination like Maspalomas, without the pressures of overcrowding in some capital cities. This trend is excellent news for the tourism sector in Maspalomas, which sees how its natural beauty and established infrastructure position it on the map for sustained growth in demand, attracting travelers who value the experience and stability of the Canary Islands destination.
