Black week in Gran Canaria: 3 murders in 4 days

The island has witnessed three murders in three consecutive days, one of them a shooting on the street in broad daylight.

Video: Two alleged hitmen arrested for the Las Longueras murder in Telde. The National Police have arrested two individuals linked to last week's murder. They are investigating whether they were hired to carry out the killing.

Gran Canaria is once again in the spotlight due to what can now be described as a worrying spiral of violence. In less than 72 hours, the island has recorded three murders in different parts of the country, creating a chain of crimes of various kinds that have set off alarm bells in Gran Canaria.

Firgas, Telde and the capital of Gran Canaria have been the scenes of this new criminal upsurge which, far from being isolated incidents, feeds a growing narrative about the insecurity in the Canary Islands.

The first case occurred this Tuesday in Firgas, where a 57-year-old man was found dead inside his home with obvious signs of violence. The body showed several stab wounds inflicted by his own granddaughter, who confessed to the crime along with her partner hours after the body was discovered. The motive for the crime could be drug use and money, according to the Government Delegate in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana.

Just hours later, in the early hours of Wednesday, tragedy struck Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with another murder, this time in a context of gender-based violence. A man allegedly strangled his partner to death in a home in the capital's El Zardo neighborhood. The victim, a 60-year-old woman, was found dead and covered with a blanket inside the building, while the 57-year-old perpetrator took his own life after wounding himself with a knife and hanging himself from a rope.

The latest case occurred this Thursday. Telde witnessed a shooting that left a 38-year-old man dead. The crime took place in the San José de las Longueras neighborhood, where the victim was shot at least five times. Emergency services were unable to save his life. The National Police, which has taken charge of the investigation, believes the incident is related to a settling of scores involving drug trafficking and feuding clans.

Three violent deaths, three different contexts, but events that once again call into question safety on the streets of Gran Canaria and, above all, the prevention measures to avoid these types of fatal cases.
