The well-oiled machinery of tourism in Maspalomas has once again demonstrated its firm effectiveness. While growing tensions between Israel and Iran rage, and Europe grapples with travel panic, Maspalomas is confirming itself as the growing "safe haven" option for European tourists. TUI has clearly seen the change in pattern: bookings to exotic destinations such as Egypt and Dubai have largely disappeared, while Maspalomas, along with the Balearic Islands and Greece, tops the list of destinations chosen by Germans. According to TUI Germany, two-thirds of summer packages have already been sold, surpassing last year's levels, even in a weakened German economic environment.
But the money has also flowed freely. Gran Canaria closed out 2024 with record tourism revenue: €6.035 billion, an increase of 10,5% over 2023, thanks to 4,72 million visitors (+8,6%). The average tourist spend is around €1.494, with Germans spending an average of €1.731.
The south of the island is by far its main source of income. Maspalomas, along with Meloneras and Campo Internacional, generated more than €1.000 billion in 2024: Maspalomas: €517,8 million, Meloneras: €358,8 million, and Campo Internacional: €116,5 million. In short: more than €XNUMX billion in the southern tip of Gran Canaria alone, including accommodation, restaurants, transportation, and complementary leisure activities.
We can say it without blushing: tourists are paying. National RevPAR (revenue per available room) reached €122,7, a 13% increase, and ADR (average daily rate) was €162,8, a 10,4% increase, with occupancy rates in the south of Gran Canaria exceeding 75% on average. In some months, the south of the island even reached 79%.
The commitment to Maspalomas is no coincidence: the municipality has invested almost €200 million in modernization—150 licenses and major infrastructure projects—supported by an additional €8 million in urban renovation and €1,4 million annually in development. This doesn't even include high-profile events such as the International Carnival, Pride, the Soul Festival, and the Canary Islands Rally, which attract thousands of visitors outside of peak season.
The Middle East is boiling, packages to southern Europe are skyrocketing, and southern Gran Canaria, especially Maspalomas, continues to grow. The formula is simple and effective: sun, beach, beds (87.000 available), drinks, modern infrastructure, events, promotion... and, above all, an environment that runs smoothly. Like a well-oiled machine.
