The Mogán Tuna Fair, New Year's Eve in Puerto Rico, access to Plaza Nuestra Señora del Pino in Teror, Gran Canaria 365, and the Northern Municipalities' events commemorating International Tourism Day are among the beneficiaries of the budget amendment approved by the island's plenary session with 25 votes in favor and three abstentions.
Gran Canaria Tourism presented an initiative to the Gran Canaria Island Council's plenary session to implement a budget amendment, including five extraordinary appropriations totaling €402.798,84. The proposal was previously approved by the Governing Council and ratified this Thursday by a majority vote in the July session, with 25 votes in favor and three abstentions. The increase in these subsidies, of tourist interest to the island, has no impact on the budget previously presented by the Gran Canaria Tourism Department, as it coincides with the cancellation of sponsorship, for the same amount, for the LaLiga FC Futures International Tournament.
Tourism Minister Carlos Álamo explained that this represents a reinforcement of five projects of "strategic importance to the sector and is justified by the goal of expanding the visibility of the island's tourism brand, as well as the process of diversifying the offering beyond traditional products. Furthermore, they benefit other sectors, such as the primary sector, and are aligned with the interest in attracting higher-spending customers with the ultimate goal of increasing revenue and ensuring that this wealth is distributed across the island."
This credit modification is divided into five parts. The first, worth €40.000, is intended for the Mogán City Council, as part of the grant the southern council receives to organize the eighth edition of the Tuna and Seafood Fair, a key event promoting the island's gastronomy and fishing sector in the southern Gran Canaria municipality.
The Mogán City Council also received a second grant through this credit modification. In this case, it amounts to €115.000 and is intended to support a promotional initiative during New Year's Eve held in the Puerto Rico area.
Teror City Council has received a €42.798,84 modification to its Gran Canaria Tourism allocation. The city is already collaborating with the work being carried out to refurbish the future Emblematic Hotel in Plaza de Nuestra Señora del Pino. It will now have a specific allocation to improve access to a square that attracts a large number of tourist visitors.
The Association of Northern Municipalities has received a €40.000 grant to strengthen the events held for International Tourism Day, which takes place on September 27.
Finally, the Tri, Bike & Run Association has received 165.000 euros for the Gran Canaria 365 project, a project to promote the destination to sports-oriented customers with the aim of highlighting Gran Canaria's tourism brand as an ideal place for outdoor sports 365 days a year. This project features the participation of the current best cyclist, Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, who will train on the island and participate in the TE Pico de las Nieves island race.
On the other hand, the cancellation of the LaLiga FC Futures International Tournament is due to growing competition from other destinations to host this U-12 football event. This means that the renewal of this agreement cannot be confirmed at this time, although it may be reintroduced in the future.
