The Gran Canaria Island Council Plenary Session, at the request of the Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure, Architecture and Housing, headed by Augusto Hidalgo, has today approved, by consensus, the multi-year disbursement of €53.430.723 to put out to tender the new contract for the maintenance of high-capacity roads and those located in the south of the island.
Of the total contract amount, €39.999.955 corresponds to Lot 1, High-Occupancy Roads (GC-1), while the remaining €13.430.768 is allocated to Lot South. The agreement will initially be valid for four years, although a one-year extension is contemplated, meaning it could be operational until 2030. The average annual cost for this service is estimated to be around €13,3 million for both lots.
Following the approval of the application, the Ministry of Public Works will proceed with the bidding process in the coming months with the aim of awarding the contract before the end of the year. This contract will ensure the maintenance of more than 450 kilometers of the island's road network under the responsibility of the Island Council. These projects include major roads such as the GC-1 highway, the GC-10 (Avenida del Cabildo), the GC-100 (Telde Ring Road), and the GC-60 (Maspalomas-Tunte).
The tasks included in this new tender are divided into three main categories: Operations to Facilitate Traffic—which include central services and equipment for urgent interventions; routine or scheduled maintenance work; and finally, actions aimed at rehabilitating and improving elements or extraordinary maintenance work. The first group, Operations to Facilitate Traffic, has priority over the other activities and includes those actions necessary to keep roads in optimal condition for use. These include: response to accidents and incidents affecting both the roadway and its shoulders; immediate repair of urgent damage that may compromise road safety; and interventions during adverse weather events or adverse meteorological phenomena.
