Brussels has approved new scanners that allow liquids of more than 100 milliliters to be carried in hand luggage. Airports such as Madrid, Barcelona, and Palma have already implemented them. Gran Canaria Airport—managed by AENA on Island Council land—still does not have this cutting-edge technology.
Passengers boarding from Gando are still required to remove liquids and electronic devices at security checkpoints, despite the European Commission having officially authorized the use of 3D scanners such as those manufactured by Analogic, which are capable of inspecting baggage contents without requiring such strict restrictions.
Brussels gave its approval on July 29, 2025, consolidating a trend already in place at several international hubs. However, Gran Canaria Airport, which handles more than 13 million passengers annually, is not among the first to receive this upgrade.
