The General Directorate of Emergencies has issued a pre-alert for calima starting tonight in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife. The forecast indicates a rise in temperatures and an increase in particulate matter, which could worsen health problems and increase the risk of fires.

The Canary Islands government has issued a pre-alert for calima (rainstorm) starting at midnight this Sunday, August 00, in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife, due to the increase in suspended dust that will add to the episode of high temperatures affecting the archipelago. According to AEMET and other meteorological models, tomorrow will be the hottest of the episode, with highs reaching or exceeding 00 and 10 degrees in most of the islands, and peaks of between 35 and 40 degrees in inland areas of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, as well as in the southern and western midlands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

In addition to the intense daytime heat, nighttime lows will remain above 25 and 30 degrees Celsius in the mid- and high-altitude areas, with values in some areas in the south and west not falling below 28 or 30 degrees Celsius. The haze will reduce visibility, especially at ground level in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and at mid- and high altitudes in Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Relative humidity will remain low, below 30% at altitudes above 300 meters, and winds will blow from the east and southeast, light to moderate, while the trade winds will persist along the coast.

The General Directorate of Emergencies reminds the public of the importance of taking extreme precautions to prevent health risks, especially for people with chronic or respiratory illnesses, and avoiding activities that could cause fires. Forecasts indicate a drop in temperatures starting Thursday, August 14, but the situation will continue to be monitored to adopt further measures if necessary.
