Antonio Garzón, an expert in tourism management in southern Gran Canaria, demanded this August, in conjunction with International Youth Day, that the economic capital of the Canary Islands attract Generation Z to its business because it is losing market share. In his opinion, "the solution relies on two pillars: a tailored destination offering and accommodation designed for the preferences" of this group.
Garzón emphasizes that, according to the presentation by Noelia Medida, head of the German market at Turismo Gran Canaria, the share of German tourists between the ages of 16 and 30 has fallen by 17% between 2019 and 2024. This decline contrasts with the increase in visitors over 60, who now represent a third of the German market. "All segments are important, but maintaining a balance is vital," says Garzón, who warns of the risk of the island becoming associated with tourism exclusively for seniors, which could further discourage the arrival of young people.
The "destination offering," which includes nightlife and experiences, is crucial for Generation Z. It is worth noting that a 2022 study identified a significant decline in nightlife in southern Gran Canaria, particularly in the commercial areas of Playa del Inglés. The report highlighted two "Bermuda triangles" (obsolete leisure areas): the first, formed by the Kasbah, Plaza, and Metro shopping centers, and the second, by Jardín del Sol, Gran Chaparral, and Nilo. "The modernization of these enclaves presents a crucial opportunity to attract a younger audience again," it states.
The expert highlights international concepts such as Meininger Hotels, which offer affordable and flexible accommodation. In this context, Gran Canaria has taken a bold step with the recent opening of the Sholeo Lodge Maspalomas Hotel by the Canarian Hospitality company (Acosta Matos). For Antonio Garzón, this hotel represents a "very brave move" for two reasons. On the one hand, it targets Generation Z with an innovative, sustainable, and flexible concept, offering options such as 24-hour dining and the ability to customize meals. On the other hand, its location in the Jardín del Sol shopping center places it directly in one of the "Bermuda Triangles," in an area in need of revitalization. Sholeo Lodge, under its own brand philosophy, seeks to integrate guests with their surroundings, which could catalyze the regeneration of this area and, in doing so, contribute to attracting a vital segment for the future of tourism in Gran Canaria.
