A sudden storm interrupted the afternoon calm in Maspalomas, dumping rain and dust and covering the streets with a fine blanket. The phenomenon surprised residents and tourists in the middle of August.
The afternoon in Maspalomas was passing with high temperatures and a typically summery atmosphere when, unexpectedly, a storm descended heavily on the southern part of Gran Canaria. The event, accompanied by haze, caused a rainstorm containing dirt that soaked the streets and sidewalks of the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
Streets that, after weeks of drought and heat, welcomed the storm like an unexpected respite, albeit tinged with dust particles. The sky, which had remained clear for much of the day, abruptly changed to shades of ochre and gray, heralding the arrival of rain. Residents and tourists were surprised by a brief but intense downpour, which disrupted the day's rhythm and forced many to seek shelter.
Although the haze had marked the atmosphere since early morning, the storm helped partially clear the air, carrying away some of the suspended Saharan dust. However, the water mixed with soil left a visible trail on the streets, facades, and vehicles.
