Tourism in southern Gran Canaria: 82% occupancy amid euphoria in supply and cautious demand

Gran Canaria's tourism sector faces a dual outlook in the coming months: on the one hand, robust air travel and stable occupancy rates are consolidating its success; on the other, a series of demand indicators are raising a red flag for the future. Analysis of data from the Gran Canaria Tourist Board updated as of August 18 reflects a destination experiencing rapid growth, but with the need to closely monitor traveler trends.

The island's strength in terms of air capacity is undeniable. The total number of airline seats (domestic and international) exceeded 800.000 during the peak periods of August and September, demonstrating the airlines' commitment to the destination. This expansion translates into impressive year-over-year growth of +7,64% in August and +7,50% in September, far exceeding the previous year's supply. The majority of this growth comes from the international market, which has seen a steady increase in seats from August to December.

This increased supply is being effectively absorbed, as projected hotel occupancy remains at very high levels. Forecasts indicate it will exceed 82% in August and 83% in September, with percentages above 75% in the fall and winter months, demonstrating the island's ability to fill its beds despite increased competition.

The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its position as the main booking engine, leading hotel reservations by a significant margin compared to markets such as Spain and Germany. However, confidence in the future is not complete. This is where the most recent data raises the first warning sign: the year-over-year variation in flight searches has entered negative territory. After a period of growth, both domestic and international searches have fallen sharply in recent weeks. The same trend is observed in flight bookings, which also entered a negative variation in the August-October period, suggesting that the pace of sales has slowed considerably compared to last year.

Gran Canaria is in a strong position with robust air travel and guaranteed occupancy for the short term. However, online demand data suggests a possible change in trend that could affect the winter season. The tourism sector should pay attention to this slowdown in searches and bookings to avoid a slowdown, ensuring that the summer momentum extends throughout the low season.
