San Bartolomé de Tirajana joyfully celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Carbonero Descent during its patron saint festivities.

 

The town of San Bartolomé de Tirajana once again paid tribute to one of the most beloved and representative traditions of its patron saint festivities: the Descent of the Carbonero, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year.

 

The event, now a classic part of the festive program honoring the patron saint, brought together hundreds of people who joined in the remembrance of one of the hardest and most distinctive trades of the people of Tirajana. The procession set off from the Plaza del Carbonero, descending to the old town of Tunte, a route marked by soot, music, and the complicity of locals and visitors who kept the memory of the charcoal makers of old alive.

 

 

 

 

The celebration featured the special participation of the Agaete Band, whose unmistakable sound accompanied the participants throughout the entire route. Along with them, the traditional papagüevos (parrots) and the joy of the soot-covered attendees remembered with respect and amusement those who dedicated their lives to a trade that for centuries supported numerous families in the region.

 

The route, which passed through the main streets of Tunte's historic center, was punctuated by moments of community gatherings, with local residents pouring water from rooftops and balconies to refresh the charcoal burners, thus adding a festive warmth to the memory of a task that marked local history.

 

The arrival in town culminated in a jubilant atmosphere, where tradition fused with celebration. The evening continued with a massive popular festival, enlivened by performances by D'Music and Armonía Show, which kept the celebration alive well into the early hours.

 

The Councilor for Celebrations and Events, Yilenia Vega, emphasized the importance of keeping this event alive: “The Descent of the Carbonero is much more than a festive event. It is a reflection of our collective memory and a tribute we pay to the men and women who, through effort and sacrifice, forged part of Tirajana's identity.”

 

 

 

 

For his part, the first deputy mayor, Alejandro Marichal, emphasized that this 25th anniversary represents "a recognition of our ancestors and a profession that, with sacrifice and effort, sustained Tirajana families for centuries. Keeping this event alive means keeping alive our roots, our history, and the pride of being part of this land." 

 

With this 25th anniversary, the Carbonero Descent is consolidated as a cultural and popular heritage that unites generations around the memory of a trade that is now an inseparable part of the municipality's history.
