The Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency (ABAQUA) has awarded the contract to modernize the Alcudia desalination plant (Mallorca) to the joint venture formed by FACSA and ELMASA, for a total of €2.205.556,64 (excluding VAT).
The project includes the installation of state-of-the-art isobaric chamber recuperators, which will allow for the recovery of up to 98% of the brine's energy, as well as the complete migration of the control system (PLC/SCADA). The project also includes increasing production capacity by 1.000 m³/day, thus strengthening the security of supply in the northern part of the island.
A key infrastructure for water in the Balearic Islands
The Alcudia IDAM, inaugurated in 2010, currently has a capacity of 14.000 m³/day, supplying Alcudia, Pollença, and nearby municipalities. After more than a decade in service, it is now undergoing a crucial modernization process to improve its energy efficiency, digitalization, and operational reliability, amidst significant pressure from tourism on water resources.
Energy and economic impact
According to forecasts, the plant will produce 4,32 hm³/year after the renovation, at an operating cost of 2,54 million euros per year, equivalent to €0,588/m³. The estimated savings reach €310.836 per year, which is 10,9% less than the current situation.
Modernization of the plant in service
The main challenge of the project will be executing the works at a facility that must continue operating without interruption. The joint venture brings experience in this field thanks to previous projects at eight desalination plants in the Canary Islands, with an installed capacity of more than 60.000 m³/day.
Innovation and sustainability
The modernization of the Alcudia desalination plant represents a step forward in adapting island infrastructure to current challenges, including high seasonal demand, the need to reduce energy consumption and emissions, and the digitalization of processes.
