A head-on collision between two passenger cars on the GC-500 highway near the San Bartolomé de Tirajana airfield left a woman and a man in critical condition Thursday morning. Both were taken to referral hospitals in Gran Canaria.
The accident occurred at 10:11 a.m. on Thursday, August 28, 2025, on the GC-500 highway in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The head-on collision between two vehicles left the drivers trapped, requiring the intervention of the municipal firefighters to free them. Emergency crews also secured the area to allow the medical helicopter to land.
The Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) treated the two victims at the scene. A 43-year-old woman suffered multiple serious injuries and was evacuated in critical condition by medical helicopter to the Doctor Negrín University Hospital of Gran Canaria. A 53-year-old man also suffered multiple serious injuries and was transported in critical condition by medical ambulance to the Insular University Hospital of Gran Canaria.
The operation involved a medical helicopter, a medical ambulance, a medical ambulance, and two basic life support ambulances from the SUC (Uninstitutional Unit of the University of San Bartolomé de Tirajana) along with the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Fire and Rescue Service, Civil Guard officers, and road maintenance personnel. The Civil Guard temporarily closed the road to facilitate the response of the resources and conducted the corresponding report, while the maintenance service cleared and secured the roadway.
