The Virgin of the Pine: faith, history, and devotion in the heart of Gran Canaria

MASPALOMAS24H Sunday, August 31, 2025

In the green heart of Gran Canaria, in the municipality of Teror, devotion to the Virgin of the Pine, patron saint of the Diocese of the Canary Islands, has been alive for centuries. Its history dates back to 1481, when, according to tradition, the Marian image appeared atop a majestic pine tree in the town, a tree that would eventually become a symbol of hope and faith for all the people of the Canary Islands.

LET'S GO TO PINO - ALL THE INFORMATION HERE

The Gothic sculpture of the Virgin, of great artistic delicacy, was recognized from very early on as the protector of the island. Her cult grew steadily until 1914, when Pope Benedict XV proclaimed her patron saint of the Diocese of the Canary Islands. Since then, every September, thousands of pilgrims from all over the island travel along paths and trails to reach Teror, in an act of love and gratitude that transcends generations.

The pilgrimage to El Pino is not only a religious tradition, but also a unique cultural and social event in the Canary Islands. Entire families, young and old, and solo hikers walk the trails of the midlands and summits at night, with candles, songs, and prayers, in search of an intimate encounter with the Virgin. Upon arriving at the Basilica of Teror, the emotion overflows: tears, fulfilled promises, and prayers intertwined with the ringing of bells and the aroma of corn cobs, Teror chorizo, and traditional sweets that fill the square.

The Virgin of the Pine symbolizes the unity of the people of Gran Canaria, uniting faith, culture, and tradition. No matter the distance or the weariness of the journey: every step toward Teror is an act of love, a heartbeat shared by thousands of hearts who find solace and hope in her. Around her image, Gran Canaria relives every September a song of its roots, an embrace of identity and devotion that keeps the essence of the island alive.
