The Blood Moon of September 7 appears between haze and clouds in southern Gran Canaria.

This Sunday, the sky will offer an astronomical spectacle with the so-called Blood Moon. In the Canary Islands, the lunar eclipse will only be visible partially, and the presence of haze may affect observations in southern Gran Canaria.

The Canary Islands government has declared a pre-alert for calima in Gran Canaria.

On September 7, 2025, the Moon will be tinged with reddish hues during a total eclipse that will be visible across much of the world. In the Canary Islands, however, the totality phase will coincide with moonrise and the entire eclipse will not be visible. From southern Gran Canaria, observers will be able to enjoy the end of the partial eclipse starting at 18:30 p.m., weather permitting, as the Canary Islands government has issued a calima warning.

The phenomenon, known as a Blood Moon, occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon. Earth's atmosphere filters sunlight, scattering the blue hues and allowing only the reddish wavelengths to pass through, which illuminate the lunar surface, giving it its characteristic color.

On this occasion, observations will be marked by the pre-alert issued for the presence of calima (a type of dust cloud) in the Canary Islands. This suspended dust can reduce the sharpness of the sky and blur the view of the Moon, although it also enhances the reddish tones of the phenomenon. Furthermore, cloudy periods are expected in southern Gran Canaria, with temperatures close to 27°C during the afternoon and around 21°C at night. Despite these conditions, the end of the partial eclipse can be appreciated from viewpoints, coastal areas, and open spaces with low light pollution.

Experts recommend seeking elevated locations or open beaches to observe the phenomenon and avoiding areas with excessive artificial light. No special optical instruments are required, although binoculars and telescopes can enhance the experience.
