The start of the week will be marked by the arrival of suspended dust, high temperatures, strong trade winds and rough seas on the island's southern coast, according to AEMET Canarias.
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) confirms that Sunday, September 7, 2025, will be influenced by the presence of calima, which has led the Canary Islands Government to declare a pre-alert for calima in the eastern islands, Gran Canaria (peaks, east, south, and west), Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura. This phenomenon will reduce visibility and will particularly affect the midlands and coastal areas of southern Gran Canaria.
Regarding temperatures, highs of up to 28°C are expected along the southern coastal strip, with lows around 22°C. Inland and mid-mountain areas, temperatures could reach slightly higher, approaching 30°C, creating a hot environment filled with dust.
The trade winds will blow strongly from the northeast, reinforcing the feeling of muggy conditions but at the same time slightly softening the temperature during the central hours of the day. These gusts, characteristic of this time of year, will also influence the sea conditions.
On the southern coast, the sea will be rough and with periods of strong swell in the most exposed areas. Caution is advised for swimmers and boaters, as wind and waves may hamper water activities.
Authorities urge sensitive individuals, especially those with respiratory illnesses, to limit exposure to airborne dust and maintain adequate hydration. The calima phenomenon, although common during this time of year, can intensify the sensation of heat and make visibility difficult on roads and during outdoor activities.
