An event to discover the winners of a circuit that attracts the attention of athletes who enjoy open water adventures. Saturday, September 20th, will mark the culmination of the Open Water Series in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
Following the Mogán, La Gomera, and Playa de Aro cruises in Girona, the Maspalomas Open Water Gran Canaria is coming up, crowning the overall winners of the 2024-2025 season, organized by Top Time Eventos.
The presentation of this trip, supported by the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, the Gran Canaria Tourist Board, and the Island Council's Sports Institute, took place today, Tuesday, in the Maspalomas Lighthouse area.
The mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Marco Aurelio Pérez, expressed his satisfaction with the event's fourteenth edition, "and its continued consolidation and growth. We want those who participate and those who come as spectators to enjoy it. The professionals from the municipality's various departments are fully involved in all the events we hold here."
Also in attendance was Gran Canaria's Tourism Minister, Carlos Álamo, who praised "the showcase that an event of this type provides to continue generating this connection between tourism and sport. These are images that will be seen around the world. And we also value the fact that it's an event that pays great attention to sustainability and environmental protection in several aspects. It will be quite a spectacle that will showcase part of the wonderful coastline we have in Gran Canaria."
Finally, Víctor Navarro, who attended on behalf of the Island Sports Institute, added that "this edition of the Maspalomas Open Water Gran Canaria represents further support for continuing to promote our plans to encourage physical activity throughout the island."
And while the runner's bag will be handed out on the afternoon of Friday the 19th, on Saturday the participants' starts across the three distances will be distributed to generate the final rankings.
At 11.00:7.400 a.m., with El Pajar beach as the starting point, those registered for the 1.29.51-meter long distance race will head toward the finish line near the Maspalomas Lighthouse. Last year's race saw Eduard Mannanov win with a time of 1.53.19:1.57.06:59, followed almost nine minutes later by Yare Cocera. Elena Sarmiento was the first woman to cross the finish line, clocking 64:XNUMX:XNUMX, followed by Isabel Valido (XNUMX:XNUMX:XNUMX). Fifty-nine of the XNUMX entrants finished.
Next, the swimmers will enter the water from Meloneras Beach at 12.00:2.000 p.m. They will complete the 2024-meter popular event. The top four finishers finished the 26.54 competition by just four seconds, with Lucas Henríquez clocking a time of 27.58, followed by Jeremy Peña, Daniel Sosa, and Rafael Henríquez. In the women's event, Olivia Aguilar won with a time of XNUMX, followed three seconds later by Raquel Ruiz and Valeria Pulido.
At 13.00:39 p.m., it will be the turn of those who swim the thousand meters, the so-called Promo event, starting from the Lighthouse Dock. Only one of the 13.40 entrants' GPS chip failed to cross the finish line in this distance, with Alonso Suárez, who completed the course in 14.17:XNUMX, and Nerea Hernández (XNUMX:XNUMX) as the winners.
