Are the taxis in Maspalomas like the parking lot that bears its name?

The tourist heart of Maspalomas, the economic engine of the Canary Islands, is experiencing a flagrant paradox that outrages its residents: while it generates billions of euros in revenue, its essential infrastructure, such as its service parking, languishes in a state of obvious neglect. The image of the parking lot bearing the name of the taxi cooperative on Avenida Alejandro del Castillo in San Fernando de Maspalomas has become a symbol of an "abandonment" that goes beyond simple deterioration.

Citizen criticism on social media points directly to the disproportion between the wealth generated and the quality of basic services. The area, close to important service areas such as Roads and Works and the Fire Department, has facilities that border on neglect.

Paradoxically, the taxi fleet that uses this space, although diverse, is required by law to maintain cleanliness and safety standards to operate in the tourist area. The vehicles themselves, subject to rigorous vehicle inspections and municipal inspections, are generally in adequate condition. However, the location where they are parked and arranged to serve the tourist industry is evidence of the negligence in maintaining community infrastructure.

The residents' discontent can be summed up in one question: "Is Maspalomas just a 'cash cow for politicians'?" The general feeling is that municipal investment is focused on prime tourism (beaches and leisure areas), while the neighborhoods that support this industry—including San Fernando—receive only "crumbs" for basic maintenance. This disparity is an unfinished business for the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council. The criticism is that the prosperity of a leading destination should be reflected in impeccable care and visibility throughout the municipality, not just in the areas frequented by visitors. The image of degraded vacant lots and parking lots not only tarnishes the image of Maspalomas for outsiders, but above all, undermines the quality of life of the residents whose daily work sustains Gran Canaria's economic model.
