This September, which is coming to an end, Gran Canaria showcased itself to a group of German travel agents on a tour that took them through some of the island's most iconic landscapes, such as Maspalomas, and the rugged wilderness.
The fvw|TravelTalk familiarization trip, in collaboration with the Gran Canaria Tourist Board, aimed to take them away from the usual sun and beach circuit to show them the other side of a territory that, although familiar to any Canarian, surprised visitors with its intensity.

The route began at the Degollada de las Yeguas Viewpoint, on the border between the arid south and the first inland ravines. From there, participants contemplated the cliffs and meadows planted with avocado, orange, almond, and dragon trees.
The route continued toward the peaks, with a mandatory stop at Roque Nublo, after a one-hour hike at over 1.800 meters above sea level. The group was impressed not only by the panoramic views of the island and Mount Teide in neighboring Tenerife, but also by the formations surrounding Nublo: Roque de la Rana and Roque del Fraile, whose silhouette resembles a monk in prayer.

The guides reminded visitors how these mountains were formed 14,5 million years ago by gigantic lava flows, and how the interior was linked for decades to tomato cultivation. Today, with agriculture in decline, nature is regaining prominence thanks to the Canary Island pines, replanted since the 1960s.

The day concluded at Hotel El Refugio, a recently renovated, historic 350-year-old building, where German tourism professionals sampled typical island dishes. There, the mist drifted between cliffs and pine forests, enveloping Nublo in the same aura of mystery that the ancient Canarians once knew, who venerated it as a sacred place.
A different Gran Canaria for the German market
The objective of the trip was clear: to demonstrate that Gran Canaria, in addition to Maspalomas and the sun and beach offerings that dominate the catalogs, has other products to offer. For the German professionals, it was a way to rediscover the island, offering new opportunities for travelers seeking hiking, nature, and authenticity.
