The City Council is organizing a program of commemorative cultural and institutional events that begin this Thursday in Tunte with the presence of the eleven municipalities that make up the Association of Galician Municipalities of the French Way.
The City Council, chaired by Mayor Marco Aurelio Pérez Sánchez, will hold a program of cultural and institutional events this October to commemorate the 131st anniversary of the naming of the Villa de San Bartolomé de Tirajana, a title granted on October 3, 1894, by Queen Regent María Cristina "for the increase in its population and the progress of its industry and commerce," according to the decree issued by the then Minister of the Interior, Alberto Aguilera y Velasco.
The program of activities organized by the Department of the Presidency, Culture and Education, headed by Deputy Mayor Elena Álamo Vega, will begin this Thursday at 8:00 p.m. at the Pancho Guerra Cultural Center, in the historic center of Tunte, where historian Fernando Bruquetas will offer a presentation on the history of the Santiago del Pinar pilgrimage "dating back to the 16th century and continuing into the 19th century," and the Camino de Santiago in Gran Canaria.
The opening ceremony, which will also feature a floral offering to the icons of Saint Bartholomew and the Apostle Saint James, is expected to be attended by a delegation of representatives of the Commonwealth of Galician Municipalities of the French Way (Pedrafita do Cebreiro, Triacastela, Samos, Sarria, Paradela, Monterroso, Palas de Rei, Melide, Arzúa, O Pino and Portomarin), chaired by María Olga Iglesias Fontal.
Also scheduled for this Friday in Tunte, starting at 19:00 p.m., is a dramatized tour about the history of La Villa, followed by a candlelight concert illuminated by candles, oil lamps, and lanterns in the Plaza del Tenderetunte.
On Saturday, October 4, the celebration moves to the Mirador de Las Dunas, where Masdanza will offer the contemporary dance shows Unarys, Quema, Burnt, and Vibra, performed by companies from Lanzarote, Barcelona, San Sebastián (Basque Country), and Blanes (Catalonia).
The program also includes the celebration of the honors and distinctions gala of San Bartolomé de Tirajana 2025, which will be held on Saturday, October 11 at the Maspalomas Cultural Center, where the titles of Favorite Son of the municipality will be awarded to Pedro José Franco López, and that of Adopted Son to Theo Gerlach and Andrés Ocón Guzmán, and where the gold medal of the municipality will also be presented to Angel Marrero Rivero, Tatiana Mar Vaquero, Francisco Brazuelo Cañizares, María Dolores Osés Merino, Orlando Viera Morales, Ann Kristin Ekstrand Celis and Josefa Trujillo Abrante, and the recognition of 'honorary councilor' to former councilor Benito Pérez Franco.
The events commemorating the 131st anniversary of the granting of the Villa title to San Bartolomé de Tirajana will conclude with the concert "Songs that taste of the sea," given by the Las Palmas Symphony Orchestra in the Plaza del Faro in Maspalomas on Saturday, October 25 at 20:00 p.m.
