Southern Gran Canaria strengthens its tourism position thanks to the security of the State Forces.

The south of Gran Canaria consolidates its leadership in global tourist perception with an index of 82,4 points, surpassing both Mallorca (73,3) and Antalya (78,2) and Tenerife (84,7), according to the latest data from Mabrian for Gran Canaria Tourism updated to October 7, 2025. Although the Tenerife destination maintains the first place, the island of Gran Canaria shows a positive year-on-year evolution of 1,7%, slightly above the Balearic average.

The index breakdown reveals that safety (93 points) and climate (90) are the factors most valued by tourists visiting Gran Canaria, consolidating its reputation as a safe destination with a privileged climate. However, the hotel (68) and tourism product (70) indices are below 75 points, highlighting a perceived quality gap compared to destinations such as Tenerife, where both sub-indices reach 69 and 79 points respectively. "Gran Canaria continues to be synonymous with stability, but visitors are beginning to demand experiences and accommodations with higher added value," explains an Amadeus analyst consulted by Maspalomas24H. This trend reflects the need to continue promoting the diversification of the tourism product—particularly in the south of the island—and raise average hotel quality.

In terms of international connectivity, Gran Canaria recorded a modest year-on-year growth of 1,08% in international air seats for the October–December period and 3,54% for January–March. In contrast, Antalya experienced a jump of 78,8%, driven by its incentive policy and the strengthening of Russian and Middle Eastern tourism. While the Canary Islands maintain their traditional dependence on Western European tourism, Turkey is rapidly expanding its mix of source markets. Despite this, Gran Canaria retains its position as the leading winter destination for the British and Nordic markets, benefiting from stable weather and connectivity with low-cost airlines.

Hotel prices: stability at three stars, pressure at five

The analysis of average prices shows a tendency toward containment in the mid-range segment. Between October and December, average rates per night in Gran Canaria were €128 for three-star hotels, €166 for four-star hotels, and €314 for five-star hotels. Although the upper range remains competitive compared to Tenerife (€355) and Mallorca (€364), the gap with Antalya is significant: five-star hotels there barely reach €230 per night, a difference that partly explains the Turkish destination's appeal in package tour markets.

From January to March, prices in Gran Canaria show slight increases (€139, €180, and €327, respectively), suggesting strong winter demand and efficient seasonality control. Despite the positive overall perception, review data reveal that Gran Canaria has an average hotel satisfaction rating of 64,3 for three-star hotels, 70,8 for four-star hotels, and 78 for five-star hotels, below Tenerife (77,8 for five-star hotels) and Antalya (over 80). The gap in satisfaction reflects not so much a structural problem, but rather a gap in expectations in the mid-range segment, where visitors demand standards comparable to those of continental destinations.

Gran Canaria enters the winter of 2025 with a solid balance between perception, connectivity, and prices, but with clear challenges in hotel repositioning and product differentiation. Climate and safety remain its strengths, but the competitive future of southern Gran Canaria will depend on its ability to offer a more premium, sustainable experience, consistent with the post-pandemic evolution of European tourists.
