In the history of the Canary Islands, there are companies that are born in offices, and others that are born from hunger. José Bolaños León's belongs to the latter species: one that sprouts without business schools, but with intelligence, vision, and strong hands. It was 1936 when his family, driven by poverty in the north of Gran Canaria, arrived southeast, to La Banda del Carrizal (Ingenio). They lived in a cave, amid tomato harvests and grueling days. By day, he worked in the fields; by night, a neighbor taught him how to write and add. Thus was forged his intelligence, the kind that decades later would transform the island's economy.
Because great companies aren't born from banks, but from the earth, the calloused hands, and the dignity of those who choose not to give up. And that's exactly what Grupo Bolaños represents, a Canarian empire with a humble heart and a global vision.
Since he was a child, José Bolaños traveled through the villages with agricultural products. His first vehicle was a used motorcycle; later, together with his brother Raimundo, he bought a van that allowed them to expand their sales to the north and south of Gran Canaria. Trading became his passion, and hard work became his philosophy of life. His partner and associate was Ana Marrero López, his driving force both personally and professionally. Together, they raised eight children and shared a dream: to build something that would transcend. That dream grew into the Bolaños Group, today a Canarian conglomerate that has diversified its business areas to cover a large part of the local and regional economy.
In the food sector, Supermercados Bolaños and Hipersur Alimentación Bolaños have established themselves as local leaders, combining local supermarkets with a cash & carry model that serves both private and professional customers. The philosophy of proximity and commitment remains the same as that applied by little José, delivering products from town to town.
The Group also diversified into the home, with brands such as Bolaños Hogar, Bolaños Home, and Cosas del Hogar, offering all types of household goods, from furniture to small appliances, while maintaining the same customer service that distinguishes the family. In the real estate sector, Bolaños Inmobiliaria operates in residential rentals, tourist rentals, and industrial rentals, combining business tradition with the modernity of the Canary Islands tourism market.
But the agricultural origins are not forgotten: Bolaños Agricultura maintains its own plantations and exports products, thus closing a circle that begins in the land and reaches the international consumer. This commitment to the future is also reflected in EcoBolaños, the group's green energy division, which demonstrates that a legacy of hard work can go hand in hand with innovation and sustainability.
Decades later, the principles remain intact: effort, commitment, and service. More than 150 direct employees today make up the Bolaños Group's family, which combines family tradition with professionalism, making each business area a testament to its original vision. Under the leadership of José Luis Bolaños Marrero and the rest of the family, the Group continues to grow without losing its roots: from the north where José Bolaños was born to the south where he established himself, each company reflects the story of a man who began in a cave and ended up leaving a profound mark on Gran Canaria.
