The traditional garrote: fencing and living memory in southern Gran Canaria

In the dry ravines and trails of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Telde, and Valsequillo, a sound can be heard that doesn't hurt, but speaks of centuries of history. It is the rhythmic clash of clubs: the heart of the Juego del Garrote Tradicional (Traditional Garrote Game), the most ancient stick fencing technique in Gran Canaria. Here, the club is not a weapon, but a language; each movement tells a story of skill, honor, and community.

Of pre-Hispanic origin, the Juego del Garrote (Garrote Game) distinguishes itself from other forms of sport in the archipelago. Players, facing off one-on-one, deploy a repertoire of techniques where skill and dexterity prevail over brute force. The objective is not to cause damage, but rather to elegantly execute attacks and defenses, disarm the opponent, and demonstrate mastery of the garrote, an extension of one's own hand and a reflection of the pastoral tradition that once marked life in the midlands and mountains of Gran Canaria.

Although in past centuries this form of combat was present throughout the island, today it only survives in a few areas in the southeast. It was in the 1980s that a process of cultural recovery began, led by families and masters who kept the practice alive: the Calderín family from Valsequillo, the Mederos family from Tafira, Pancho el Rojo family from Firgas, and Juan Evangelista family from Gáldar, among others. Thanks to them and to traditional schools, Garrote continues to teach new generations the art of a combat that is dance, memory, and heritage.

The Traditional Garrote Game is not just a sport; it's a link to the past, an expression of identity, and an island-wide Site of Cultural Interest (BIC). It reminds us that the history of Gran Canaria is not only written in its streets and stones, but also in the clubs that are struck with respect and precision on a terrain where tradition lives on.
