The seal guarantees that the fruit reaches customers in the best conditions of flavor, quality, freshness, and food safety.
Last year, the chain distributed more than 1,6 million kilos of bananas, avoiding 10 tons of food waste.
SPAR Gran Canaria has renewed its certification for its controlled ripening process for Canary Island bananas for another year. This certification guarantees that the fruit meets established standards and reaches customers in the best possible condition of flavor, quality, freshness, and food safety.
This certification, accredited by the independent auditor Agrocolor, confirms the chain's commitment to excellence and sustainability. Thanks to this ripening system, SPAR Gran Canaria adjusts production to actual demand, reducing food waste by approximately 10 tons annually.
SPAR Gran Canaria remains the only supermarket chain in the archipelago that purchases bananas directly from local farmers and carries out the entire controlled ripening process in-house, reinforcing the brand's commitment to zero-mile produce and the local economy.
Since 2022, the supermarket chain has been consecutively renewing this accreditation, which also endorses the logistics system used by SPAR Gran Canaria to manage the product after ripening. Once the process is complete, the bananas are stored, transported, and distributed in returnable boxes, ensuring that the fresh food reaches the point of sale while maintaining its high quality.
These returnable boxes minimize potential damage to the fruit, reduce the use of packaging, and promote optimal ventilation, achieving more efficient and even ripening. Thanks to this system, SPAR Gran Canaria has distributed 1.642.406 kilos of perfectly conditioned Canarian bananas to the various points of sale across the island's 21 municipalities last year.
This entire process is carried out at the logistics platform dedicated exclusively to fresh fruits and vegetables, located in Mercalaspalmas. It is the largest logistics center in the Canary Islands dedicated exclusively to the processing of these products. Each day, more than 100 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables are received at its facilities, more than 58% of which come directly from local suppliers, consolidating the chain's commitment to local produce and boosting the island's economy.
