The renowned designer teaches a practical workshop on textile transformation and sustainability for teachers at the Gran Canaria School of Art and Design.
The initiative is part of the 2025/2026 Gran Canaria Moda Cálida training cycle, promoted by the Association of Fashion Creators of Spain (ACME) and the Gran Canaria Island Council to promote innovation and training in the fashion sector.
The 2025/2026 training cycle of the Gran Canaria Warm Fashion Program continues its programming with the workshop Upcycling Denim – From Jeans to Corsetted Top, taught by designer Maya Hansen, an international reference in the field of corsetry fashion.
The activity, held at the Gran Canaria School of Art and Design, was aimed at faculty interested in incorporating sustainable methodologies and textile transformation processes into their teaching practices.
The workshop, held between 9:00 a.m. and 14:00 p.m., offered a practical experience focused on transforming denim garments into corseted tops. Using the technique of upcycling(reuse of materials and products to create new ones of greater ecological and economic value), Hansen introduced the participants to a creative process that combines the molding (shaping fabric directly on a mannequin to create a 3D garment) with unconventional pattern making, challenging traditional dressmaking norms and opening up new pedagogical and design avenues.
The Councilor for Economic Development, Industry, Commerce, and Crafts of the Gran Canaria Island Council, Minerva Alonso, emphasized that "with initiatives like this, we continue to strengthen the connection between the educational and professional sectors, promoting innovation, sustainability, and creativity as the cornerstones of a future-oriented fashion in Gran Canaria."
With over 20 years of experience and 33 collections presented, Maya Hansen has dressed international celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Kylie Jenner, and Shakira. Her training program on the island reinforces the Gran Canaria Island Council's commitment to specialized education that integrates sustainability, technology, and cutting-edge design within the Gran Canaria Moda Cálida program.
