Its president, Ángel Medina, collected the award for the Best Potato Valorization Project in Gran Canaria 2025, awarded by the Island Council to the chain for its commitment to the primary sector.

SPAR Gran Canaria has been awarded the 2025 Best Potato Valorization Project in Gran Canaria, in recognition of the chain's commitment to the primary sector and its continued support for this product, through initiatives such as the local potato agreement, which has been in place for sixteen years.

Within the framework of the 7th Gran Canaria Island Potato Fair, which will be held from October 17 to 19 at the Teror Auditorium, Ángel Medina, president of SPAR Gran Canaria, emphasized that "this award is a reflection of the joint efforts of many people who believe in the Canary Islands' countryside and the value of our products."

He added that the chain will continue working hand in hand with the primary sector so that potatoes and other local products "occupy the place they deserve on the tables of all Gran Canarians." "The goal is for consumers to enjoy a zero-mile product of the highest quality and with the flavor of our land," he emphasized.

The award recognizes SPAR Gran Canaria's commitment to the primary sector and its continued support for the island's farmers, highlighting its work in promoting local produce and strengthening the value chain that connects farming and distribution.

In this regard, the company actively collaborates in promoting this sector at the island level by signing several agreements, including the local potato agreement, sourced from crops in several municipalities on the island. SPAR Gran Canaria pre-finances the seed and guarantees the farmer a fair market price, a practice the company has maintained for years and which sets it apart within the sector due to its true commitment to local farmers.

Thanks to this agreement, more than 1.500 tons of this product were distributed last season. These varieties, Picasso, Rudolf, Spunta, and Galáctica, were collected from the 135.000 kilos of seeds that SPAR Gran Canaria distributed among the nine cooperatives and farmers participating in the program.

The Gran Canaria Island Potato Fair, organized by the Island Council and the Teror City Council, through the Rural Development Department headed by Councilor Irene Ortega, seeks to highlight the richness and potential of one of the most emblematic crops of island and regional agriculture. The event offered a broad program of activities that included talks, exhibitions, competitions, and tastings.
