Will there be a Maspalomas Christmas Market in 2025?

That's the question looming in San Bartolomé de Tirajana as the calendar ticks away and the Tourism Rehabilitation Consortium maintains, for now, its forecast that the new complex will be operational during the first half of next year. However, with November 2025 looming and Christmas just around the corner, doubts about whether the deadlines can be met are growing among shopkeepers and residents hoping to recover an iconic space, paralyzed for years by delays, contract terminations, and cost overruns.

The reconstruction project for the San Fernando Municipal Market in Maspalomas will ultimately cost approximately €8,5 million, following a budget increase of €1,54 million. The increase is primarily due to the need to terminate the contract for the second batch, initially awarded to Insae, the company responsible for the technical installations and the roof's photovoltaic system. The company failed to meet deadlines and contractual obligations, forcing the Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium—the project's executing agency—to terminate the contract and initiate a new bidding process, which could be launched in the coming months.

Meanwhile, the civil works continue under the direction of the construction company TMR. The work incorporates a GEODE mx SG structural system, with 52 mm stud and crossbar profiles and CIRCAL 75R low-carbon aluminum—manufactured with at least 75% recycled material. The new structure offers a clean, modern aesthetic, with visible joints of only 22 mm and high energy performance: a thermal coefficient Ucw of 1,1 W/m²K and a wind resistance of ±2400 Pa.

The Consortium maintains that the design not only seeks functionality and efficiency, but also sustainability and coherence with the urban environment of Maspalomas. With this, San Bartolomé de Tirajana aims to reactivate a hub of commercial and social life that, for decades, was a meeting point for residents and tourists. If the current pace of construction continues, the market could be reborn in 2025. But at this point, no one dares to guarantee that this opening will happen in time for next Christmas.
