Southern Gran Canaria strengthens its anti-violence shield: Local Police connect to VioGén

GARA HERNÁNDEZ - M24H Wednesday, October 22, 2025

The fight against gender-based violence in one of the most important tourist municipalities in the Canary Islands has taken a giant step forward with the incorporation of its local police force into the VioGén System, the state's digital hub for victim protection. The Official State Gazette (BOE) published this Tuesday the agreement signed on October 8, 2025, between the State Secretariat for Security and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council. This step means that the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Local Police cease to be a force capable of reactive action and become an active agent, fully integrated into the state network for the prevention and protection against gender-based violence, reinforcing security in a municipality with a high density of both floating and resident populations.

This agreement, signed by the Secretary of State for Security, Ana María Calvo Sastre, and Mayor Marco Aurelio Pérez Sánchez, does not entail any direct financial cost for either party, but does represent a crucial investment in security and institutional coordination. The Comprehensive Monitoring System for Gender-Based Violence Cases (VioGén) is a key tool that integrates police, judicial, and prison information. Its objective is to conduct an objective assessment of the victims' risk level in order to grade and optimize protection measures.

Until now, protection in the San Bartolomé de Tirajana district (which includes vital towns such as Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés) fell primarily to the Civil Guard. The incorporation of the Local Police into the system ensures a faster, more coordinated, and more comprehensive response at the municipal level, taking advantage of the detailed knowledge of the territory possessed by local officers.

The State Secretariat for Security undertakes to provide specialized training in the use and functionality of VioGén for local officers, in addition to establishing the necessary security and audit controls to guarantee data confidentiality. The City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana: The Local Police must implement the "Protocol for Police Assessment of the Risk Level of Gender-Based Violence" and train and specialize its members in this area, working in coordination with the competent state police force in their district. Authorized officers must actively use the system to enter and update data crucial to the protection of victims.

In such a sensitive matter, the agreement places special emphasis on confidentiality and data protection. The parties agree to strictly comply with Organic Law 7/2021 (criminal data protection) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), given that the system handles sensitive information regarding assaults, victim identification, and risk levels. The purpose of processing this data is clear: "to improve the effectiveness of victim protection" and "to prevent the risk of further assaults." Both administrations assume responsibility for their own data processing and undertake not to share this information with third parties.
