Why Maspalomas is the crucial link in Gran Canaria's fire strategy

While southern Gran Canaria prepares for international promotion at high-profile events—such as Gran Canaria Swim Week 2025 in Pasito Blanco, mentioned on the local agenda—the real battlefront for island governance is elsewhere: managing the climate crisis in the wildland-urban interface (WUI). The president of the Gran Canaria Island Council, Antonio Morales, issued a direct warning to mayors at an emergency assembly: it is imperative that municipalities strengthen planning and resources to combat forest fires. The message, although island-wide in scope, resonates with particular urgency in the Tirajana Basin, a hotspot identified by the Island Council's Head of Emergencies, Federico Grillo.

The technical analysis reveals that the greatest risk of fires is not only concentrated on the peaks, but also in the northern midlands and the Tirajana basin. The latter, which encompasses the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Maspalomas), presents a high-risk scenario: a basin that connects forested areas with the high-density coast. The coexistence of natural spaces and large urban settlements (the IUF) creates a time bomb in emergency management.

The problem in Tirajana is a paradox of risk and economics. The area is the island's tourism hub, but its vulnerability to fire directly threatens the economic asset that sustains Gran Canaria. The Island Council insists that the future of the territory and the safety of its population depend on Maspalomas assuming its "crucial role" in "discharging vegetation fuel, creating safe zones, and promoting self-protection."

Morales insists that the island defense system must function like a "precision clock." While the Island Council has invested in a team of professionals who are a "reference in Spain and Europe" in forest management—with a year-round operational system and the imminent support of the "forest cent"—this mechanism depends on the "crucial link" of the municipality. Political pressure on municipalities in the basin, such as San Bartolomé de Tirajana, is intensifying: Fire planning must be integrated into municipal emergency plans. There is a need to accelerate the implementation of the Municipal Cooperation Plans and the FDCAN, which inject millions of euros into projects. Morales and Councilor Carmelo Ramírez have been explicit about the need to accelerate the presentation and development of initiatives.

Maspalomas's ability to implement effective ordinances and mobilize its Civil Protection units will be the ultimate test of this island strategy. The risk is that municipal inaction will undermine the island's sophisticated infrastructure, jeopardizing not only these natural areas but also the economic future of Gran Canaria's main tourist destination.
