The meeting, promoted by Fedac and organized by Infecar, opens its autumn edition in the south of the island.
The exhibition will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 19:00 p.m. until Sunday, November 2nd, and will feature musical performances to liven up the tour.
The Gran Canaria Craft Fair opened its doors today for the first time this autumn and in the south of the island, with the aim of “keeping alive Fedac’s objective of promoting local crafts,” stated the President of the Gran Canaria Island Council, Antonio Morales, during the inauguration. It is, therefore, “a key space for the island’s artisans, because they can sell the work they create throughout the year,” the President affirmed.
Morales justified holding another edition of the Gran Canaria Craft Fair because “the visit of people from Gran Canaria, but especially from people who come from other places, represents an economic boost to continue with their work,” said the president, who assured that the fairs held in Maspalomas “usually have a return of between 120.000 and 200.000 euros.”
Thus, for the first time in this season, the island's artisans will be able to showcase their crafts near the Maspalomas Lighthouse, where three large tents will host 76 professionals from 17 municipalities until November 2nd. Among them are six artisans who are joining the Gran Canaria Craft Fairs, held throughout the year, to display their work.
This new event, which expands the annual calendar of artisanal crafts promotion in Gran Canaria and gives a new boost to the craft sector, not only includes more contemporary sectors such as materials recycling, ceramics, and jewelry, but also traditional crafts like blacksmithing, forging, and locksmithing; cigar making; woodturning; traditional carpentry; drawn thread work; and basket weaving. In total, six of the 25 artisanal crafts that will be showcased during the fair will feature professionals in leatherwork, jewelry, ceramics, toy making, patchwork, and glassmaking, among many others.
Ceramics is the most represented craft in this edition, a handcrafted activity that will be carried out by 12 professionals in the different stands, followed by leather goods with 10 and jewelry, with nine representatives.
Once again, artisans from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria are the most numerous: 31 of the 76 professionals participating in this edition come from the capital of Gran Canaria, followed by those from Telde, with eight; and Agüimes and San Bartolomé de Tirajana, with five each. Ingenio and Valsequillo contribute four artisans each, and Firgas and Santa María de Guía, three each. Agaete, Santa Brígida, Santa Lucía de Tirajana, and Teror will each have two artisans at the fair, while Valleseco, Moya, Arucas, Gáldar, and Mogán will each have one.
The typically pleasant weather in southern Gran Canaria has already attracted the first visitors seeking unique products with Canarian roots, offering them a glimpse into the island's culture. Meanwhile, the artisans are dedicated to explaining their crafts to visitors and selling the products they have lovingly crafted over the past few months.
Dynamization program
Until Sunday, November 2nd, the fair will be open from 10:00 AM to 19:00 PM. In addition to the display of handcrafted goods, visitors can enjoy musical performances that will enhance their experience. On Wednesday, October 29th, Zaida Jiménez and Juan Sebastián Ramírez will perform; on Friday, October 31st, Daniel Moreno, Misael Jordán, and Juan Sebastián Ramírez will take the stage; and on Saturday, November 1st, the Guardilama Duo will perform. All performances will begin at 17:00 PM.
