Southern Gran Canaria has solidified its position as a strategic hub for energy innovation following the awarding of €7,9 million to the company Ecoener, within the framework of the first call for proposals for innovative energy storage projects co-financed by the ERDF 2021-2027 Funds. This amount represents nearly 90% of the funding specifically allocated to hybrid storage projects in the Canary Islands and 29% of the total funds awarded to the region in this call. This figure reinforces the role of southern Gran Canaria not only as a leading tourist destination but also as a key territory in the archipelago's energy transition.
The funds will be used to build hybrid storage systems linked to the already operational photovoltaic plants of Llanos de la Aldea 1 and Aldea Blanca 1, 2, 3, and 4, located in San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The projects will reach 12 MW of power and 48 MWh of capacity, consolidating Ecoener's position as a leader in the development of sustainable and secure energy solutions.
“Thanks to the support of European funds, we are going to boost our storage projects with the aim of maximizing asset value and contributing to the energy transition and decarbonization goals,” says Luis de Valdivia, president of Ecoener. The company already has 132 MW installed in wind and solar farms and is also making progress on hybrid systems with wind power on the island, with 9,5 MW of capacity and 21,6 MWh of storage, financed through the Next Generation EU Funds. These developments not only increase the resilience of the electricity supply but also pave the way for a more stable and sustainable energy model, key for tourism and urban projects in southern Gran Canaria.
The project reinforces the position of southern Gran Canaria as a territory where innovation, sustainability and tourism intersect, consolidating a development model that combines the preservation of the environment with the creation of economic and social value.
