The project, funded by Next Generation EU funds, involves the installation of Starlight-certified LED luminaires
The action is part of the strategy of the Consortium, the Gran Canaria Island Council and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council to consolidate Maspalomas as a sustainable tourist destination and a benchmark in the Canary Islands.
The Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium, an entity jointly owned by the Gran Canaria Island Council and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, has published the tender documents for improving the energy efficiency of the municipality, a key action within the Tourism Sustainability Destination Plan “Impulsa Maspalomas”, financed by the European Union through the Next Generation EU funds, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Government of Spain.
This project, which has a base tender budget of 470.000 euros, focuses on improving energy efficiency through the supply and installation of Starlight-certified LED luminaires located along the Costa Canaria Promenade, from Playa del Inglés to San Agustín.
With the installation of approximately 244 streetlights and 48 tower projectors, this new technology will reduce light pollution, enhance the observation of the night sky, and improve comfort and safety in public spaces. It will last for about 5 months.
Furthermore, the use of efficient lighting will contribute to reducing energy consumption and CO₂ emissions, aligning the urban model of Maspalomas with European objectives of ecological transition and climate neutrality.
The “Impulsa Maspalomas” Plan was approved by Order No. 120 of October 30, 2023, from the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands, within the framework of the 2023 Extraordinary Call for Proposals for Sustainable Tourism Plans in Destinations. This action falls under Investment 1, Sub-measure 2, of Component 14 of the PRTR (Regional Tourism Promotion Plan), financed by the European Union through the Recovery and Resilience Facility – Next Generation EU.
Through this intervention, the Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium is advancing in its commitment to modernize the urban space under criteria of sustainability, energy efficiency and innovation in collaboration with the city council.
