The mayor of Mogán, Onalia Buenoz, has asked the Canary Islands Government to authorize tourist municipalities to regulate new local taxes. The municipal council believes that the current tax framework limits revenue generation in towns with high pressure on public services, especially those, like Mogán, that maintain an average annual occupancy rate of nearly 80 percent.

During the last fiscal year, the city council collected €1,3 million in fees and public prices, an amount considered insufficient to cover the expenses arising from tourism. There are 48 hotels operating in the municipality, 36 of which have opted to manage their own municipal revenue collection. A total of 2.962 holiday rental owners have self-assessed fees or taxes, of whom just over 600 have regularized their tax situation in the last year.

The mayor's office argues that local taxation adapted to the tourism reality would allow for a balance between the economic contribution of accommodation establishments and services linked to the sector.
