A November with a taste of summer: the heat and the haze mark the south of Gran Canaria

Southern Gran Canaria is facing a week marked by unusually high temperatures, southerly winds, and haze, according to the Canary Islands State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). The Canary Islands Government maintains its alert for the risk of forest fires due to the hot and dry conditions.

The Canary Islands Government, through its Directorate General of Emergencies, has declared a forest fire alert for Gran Canaria, effective from 10:00 AM on Tuesday, November 4th, due to an episode of abnormally high temperatures, dry air, and light haze affecting the archipelago. This measure is being implemented under the Special Civil Protection and Emergency Response Plan for Forest Fires (INFOCA), based on data from AEMET Canarias (the Spanish State Meteorological Agency).

The alert affects areas above 400 meters in altitude, where relative humidity is expected to be below 30% and a low-level temperature inversion is anticipated. In the southern and southeastern municipalities, such as Mogán, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Agüimes, and Ingenio, maximum temperatures will exceed 30°C, with light winds from the east and south, shifting to trade winds from Wednesday onwards.

This weather event marks the beginning of autumn with summer-like characteristics in the middle of November, with a dry and warm atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the usual conditions for this time of year. AEMET Canarias forecasts that the heat, haze, and wind will persist for several days, so it is recommended to take extreme precautions, avoid using fire in rural areas, and follow official updates from INFOCA and AEMET Canarias.
