New Canaries (NC) is engaged in a strategic move aimed at strengthening its political control and influence within the Gran Canaria Tourism Board. They are seeking to replace the current management with a politically aligned professional with experience in promotional marketing. This initiative is interpreted as an attempt to consolidate the party's power base following the recent internal crisis marked by the departure of prominent groups such as BNR and Roque Aguayro, and the subsequent creation of the Primero Canarias (Prica) party. In business circles within the tourism sector of southern Gran Canaria, an increased role for NC in future tourism decisions for the island was widely assumed at the World Travel Market 2025 in London.
Sources within the nationalist party confirmed that the decision to replace the management team is not due to a "personal matter," but rather a need for change after a decade of prioritizing a strictly professional profile. NC believes the time has come to place "loyal" figures in the position who can guarantee communication aligned with the party's directives, especially given the fragmentation experienced within the nationalist movement. The profile being considered is that of a marketing professional with proven experience in the tourism promotion business. This management team, under NC's control, would be located at the Gran Canaria Island Tourism Center in Playa del Inglés, "where many projects need to be capitalized upon and now require a different approach."
This adjustment will take place in one of the island's most important centers of economic power. The imminent departure of Teodoro Sosa, the mayor of Gáldar, from the Governing Board of the Gran Canaria Tourism Board—a departure from the New Canaries (NC) party, along with Inés Miranda Navarro and Minerva Alonso Santana—will open the door for new figures to enter the board. The Gran Canaria Tourism Board is a key organization where the sector's main stakeholders converge, including the president of the Canary Islands Confederation of Business Owners, Pedro Ortega; the president of the Federation of Hospitality Business Owners, José Mañaricúa; and the president of the Tourism Committee of the Las Palmas Chamber of Commerce, Santiago de Armas Fariña. NC's restructuring of the management will seek, in addition to internal cohesion, to maximize the promotional return on investment for tourism in Gran Canaria.
