The action is part of the Tourism Sustainability Destination Plan “Impulsa Maspalomas”, financed by the European Union through the Next Generation EU funds

The project will connect the public road with the Meloneras Promenade and improve mobility and energy efficiency in the Maspalomas Costa Canaria tourist area.

The Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium, an entity jointly owned by the Gran Canaria Island Council and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, has published the contract specifications for the construction of new cycle paths that will connect the existing public road with various access points to the Meloneras Promenade.

The project, with a base budget of €500.000, aims to improve mobility and reduce the environmental impact in one of Gran Canaria's most popular tourist destinations. This initiative is part of the "Impulsa Maspalomas" Tourism Sustainability Destination Plan, funded by the European Union through the Recovery and Resilience Facility – Next Generation EU, within the framework of the Spanish Government's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

The works will take place on the streets Mediterranean Sea, Caspian Sea, Siberian Sea and Norwegian Sea, as well as on several pedestrian roads and green areas in the Meloneras area, within the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

The project includes both the creation of cycle lanes alongside roads and the adaptation of existing roadways for shared use, promoting cycling through safe coexistence with motorized vehicles. In sections where cycle routes require it, the cycle path will be separated from motorized traffic by physical barriers, improving the safety and comfort of cyclists and pedestrians.

Among the complementary works planned are: the demolition and widening of sidewalks, the use of slopes in the urbanization as cycling routes, the horizontal and vertical signage of the cycling network through paints and urban signage, construction of drains, as well as the installation of furniture and bicycle parking.

In addition, the project includes pruning, transplanting some trees if necessary, and reorganizing green areas to promote a respectful integration with the urban and landscape environment.

With this initiative, the Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium, in coordination with the Gran Canaria Island Council, the Canary Islands Government's Department of Tourism and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, reaffirms its commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency and the adaptation of roads and public space towards more sustainable urban mobility.
