The Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium, a joint venture between the Gran Canaria Island Council and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, has announced the first phase of construction of new cycle paths in the Meloneras residential area, with a base budget of €500.000. This initiative is part of the "Impulsa Maspalomas" Tourism Sustainability Destination Plan, funded through the Next Generation EU program of the Spanish Government and the European Union.
The project will connect the existing public road with the Meloneras Promenade, one of Gran Canaria's main tourist attractions, and aims to improve urban mobility, road safety, and energy efficiency in the area. It includes both the creation of bike lanes alongside roadways and the adaptation of existing roads for safe shared use between bicycles and motorized vehicles, with physical barriers where necessary.
The works will take place on streets such as Mar Mediterráneo, Mar Caspio, Mar de Siberia, and Mar de Noruega, as well as on adjacent pedestrian walkways and green spaces. The planned work includes: demolition and widening of sidewalks, horizontal and vertical signage for cyclists and pedestrians, installation of bicycle parking and street furniture, pruning, tree transplanting, and redesign of green areas for a harmonious integration with the surrounding environment.
The project also takes advantage of the natural slopes of the development to optimize cycling routes, thus promoting a mobility model that reduces dependence on motorized transport and improves the visitor experience. With this initiative, Maspalomas reaffirms its commitment to sustainable mobility, energy efficiency, and adapting urban space to the challenges of 21st-century tourism. The project will not only contribute to reducing emissions but will also boost the destination's competitiveness, aligning with European standards for sustainable tourism development. The tender is now published on the State Procurement Platform. This type of project reflects how Gran Canaria combines public investment and European funds to modernize tourism infrastructure, guaranteeing benefits for both residents and visitors, while moving towards cleaner, safer, and more efficient urban mobility.
