The project, carried out by the Ministry of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Water, has restored an area of more than 77.000 square meters in a zone of high natural value in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
El Canary Islands Government has completed the closure and sealing of Degollada de las Yeguas inert waste landfill, located in the municipality of San Bartolomé, on the island of Gran CanariaThis action, led by the Ministry of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Water, has involved a total investment of 1.416.109 Euros to restore the environment to its natural balance after more than forty years of environmental damage. During the official visit to the area, Councilor Manuel Miranda, along with municipal representatives and the director of the Canary Islands Agency for the Protection of the Natural Environment (ACPMN), highlighted the progress that this project represents in complying with European regulations on sustainable waste management and ecological restoration.
The intervention has allowed for treatment and classification 2.480 cubic meters (3.720 tons) of waste accumulated since 1977, also using 9.631 cubic meters (6.067 tons) of topsoil to cover the entire affected area. This substrate will facilitate natural colonization by native plant species, thus reinforcing landscape integration and stabilizing the terrain. The project also included reforestation with 4.285 copies Adapted to local environmental conditions, these sites contribute to transforming a degraded area into a restored natural environment. With this closure, the Canary Islands are moving towards sustainable land management, allocating nearly €4,5 million between 2024 and 2025 to the sealing and ecological restoration of eight other historic landfills in the archipelago.
