Five strategic investors secure the energy of tourism in southern Gran Canaria

The Canary Islands Government approved on Monday the implementation of five hybrid battery energy storage (BESS) projects, concentrating this strategic investment in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. This action is a fundamental political and economic move to ensure energy stability and decarbonization in Gran Canaria's tourism sector.

The Regional Ministry for Ecological Transition is promoting the hybridization of existing wind farms with these LFP battery cell systems, adding a total capacity of 21,66 MWh with a power output of 9,5 MW. The objective is twofold: to reduce renewable energy curtailment and to guarantee the stability of supply in a high-demand area. Behind this critical infrastructure are five private developers: Cardo de Plata, SL, in charge of the La Caleta project (5,13 MWh); Yesquera de Aluce, SL, responsible for El Rodeo (4,56 MWh); Violeta Palmera, SL, which is developing Arcos del Coronadero (3,99 MWh); Aramillo de Doramas, SL, with Las Casillas I (3,99 MWh); and Eólicos del Matorral, SL, in charge of Lomo del Moral (3,99 MWh).

This concentration of private investment demonstrates the market's appetite for energy stability projects incentivized by European directives in the region. The location of these BESS (Basic Energy Service Systems) in San Bartolomé de Tirajana is no coincidence. By guaranteeing a clean and flexible energy supply, the Government is addressing the risk of fossil fuel dependence that has historically burdened the archipelago.

The ability to release stored energy during peak demand is vital for a hotel sector that operates 24/7. This measure not only meets EU energy transition targets but will also protect the island's largest tourism hub from future disruptions or fuel price volatility, solidifying the destination's long-term competitiveness.
