Claudia brings hope for rain to southern Gran Canaria

Maspalomas24h Tuesday, November 11, 2025

Storm Claudia could bring a welcome change to the weather in southern Gran Canaria, with moderate rain, southeasterly winds and a slight drop in temperatures, according to AEMET Canarias.

A cold front from Storm Claudia will move across the archipelago from west to east between Wednesday and Thursday, bringing the first significant episode of rain and wind this autumn, according to weather forecasts. Therefore, the Canary Islands Government has declared a state of alert for rain, wind, and flash flooding across all the islands starting tomorrow, November 12, as well as a pre-alert for storms. In addition, the pre-alert for coastal phenomena, in effect since last week, remains in place.

The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecasts that the weather front named 'Claudia' will approach the archipelago during the second half of the week, primarily affecting the south of the island. Between November 12th and 16th, southeasterly winds, increased cloud cover, and intermittent rainfall are expected, which could alleviate the drought of recent months.

In municipalities such as San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Santa Lucía, Agüimes, Ingenio, and Mogán, southeasterly winds are expected with gusts that could reach 40 kilometers per hour, accompanied by cloudy periods and occasional rain, especially on Thursday and Friday. Temperatures will tend to decrease slightly, with highs between 22 and 25 degrees Celsius and lows between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius.

El Thursday November 13In the south and southeast of Gran Canaria, the storm Claudia could bring accumulated rainfall of up to 80 millimeters in 12 hoursEspecially in southwestern and mid-altitude areas. According to AEMET Canarias, the rains could be heavy and locally take the form of thunderstorms, accompanied by strong gusts of southeasterly wind and periods of reduced visibility due to haze. This episode of instability would be one of the most significant of the autumn on the southern slopes of Gran Canaria, providing temporary relief from the prolonged drought affecting the area.

Despite the increased humidity and cloud cover, haze is expected during the first few days of the event, which could reduce visibility in higher areas and cause a feeling of muggy conditions. AEMET (the Spanish State Meteorological Agency) recommends caution on the roads and in the event of sudden showers, especially in ravines and hilly areas in the south.

The arrival of Storm Claudia brings a moderate but positive change to the weather on the southern and southeastern slopes of Gran Canaria, where the rain could provide some relief to the parched soils and vegetation affected by the lack of water. Local authorities and emergency services advise staying informed through the official channels of AEMET Canarias (the Spanish State Meteorological Agency).
