The Zero Project was presented in Maspalomas, Canary Islands. Aimed at promoting electrification from urban vehicles to motorsports, it marks a strategic turning point for southern Gran Canaria. The participation of private sector stakeholders in this initiative, in collaboration with the Canary Islands Government and the Canary Islands Automobile Federation, is seen as an early investment in the social and regulatory capital of the future island mobility market.
The choice of Maspalomas for the presentation of this project is no coincidence. As the island's main tourist hub, the south requires a visible commitment to sustainability (ESG) to maintain its appeal in European source markets. By supporting the electrification of urban and interurban mobility, private stakeholders are contributing to decarbonizing tourism-related transport, which is one of the main sources of emissions in the area. This visibility is a crucial reputational marketing asset for securing the support of investors and tour operators with strict environmental criteria.
The success of Project Zero hinges on the public-private partnership currently underway. By working alongside the Government of the Canary Islands, the participating companies secure a leading position in the development of charging infrastructure and future consumer incentive programs. The push for electrification within the competition serves as a high-performance testing ground for developing new battery and fast-charging technologies, knowledge that will then be transferred to the commercial fleet, creating a technological advantage over non-participating competitors.
